I did that as soon as the clips turned loose and would snap off! And did it with a canvas type belt.

Learn to sew on buttons. You can easily find them with tapered edges so as they’re not felt against your skin. When elasticated braces with clips accidentally come undone, that ballistic piece of metal ain’t fun.
Should the leather on the suspender tabs match your shoes, akin to have a black belt with black shoes?
